Interior Design Trends for 2021
With all of us spending a record amount of time at home, it’s no wonder that people are looking to rediscover their home and make the best change they can for 2021. A lot of these trends base themselves on making your home more of a comforting area, with neutral shades and simple materials.
So, we went through and chose our favourite predicted styles for 2021! Just some little changes to get your home feeling the best it can.
Neon Lighting
Let there be (neon) light! Pinterest and Google searches show that ‘neon lighting’, ‘colour lighting’ and ‘LED light signs’ were up towards the end of 2020 and we’re not surprised! Adding a brightly coloured LED strip or neon words to your home is an easy way to completely change the feel of a room.
Yellow and Grey
Pantone this year chose not one, but two ‘colours of the year’ – Ultimate Grey and Illuminating Yellow, two colours which we’ve seen prominently over 2020 and will definitely see more of in 2021!
“The selection of two independent colors highlight how different elements come together to express a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting, conveying the idea that it’s not about one color or one person, it’s about more than one,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.
Dark Blue Kitchens
Pantone’s 2020 Color of The Year, Classic Blue, is predicted to make a comeback across your home this year. In 2020, a lot of living rooms were changed up to become a classic navy blue however, this year the colour is making its way to the kitchen!
A modern, dark change from the popular white and beige looks we’ve become so accustomed to and it’s no surprise that a kitchen change is predicted as we are spending so much time at home (and cooking even more) than ever before.
Cottagecore
What exactly is cottagecore I hear you ask? Well, cottagecore is a social media trend which blew up in 2020. It’s very wholesome and comfort based, styling itself on old style cottages and rural country farm life.
If you go to Instagram or TikTok and type in #cottagecore, you’ll see an abundance of aesthetically pleasing images filled with soft pastels, floaty dresses, meadows and quaint interiors. Want this style? We recommend thrifting all of your products to find some really unique pieces for your home. Charity shops, eBay and anywhere that sells second hand will be your best friend but if that fails, you can always try Etsy.
Earthy Tones
Dulux announced their colour of the year as Brave Ground, a light latte brown colour. Since then, paint companies have been announcing and releasing their new ranges for 2021 based around earthy tones with rusts, deep reds, muddy browns and dark greens. We’re personally very excited for these colours and plan to embrace the calming grounded colours.
A Global Influence
Hawaiian, Japandi and all that’s in between. Tropical leaves, florals and bright palm print are what you’ll need for your very own Hawiian styled home, but don’t forget the bright tropical colours and lemon tones.
Japandi mixes the styles of Japan with the Scandinavian Minimalist style (think, Ikea!). It made a big impact when it became a key trend last year, however last year only heightened its popularity. Want to create your own Japandi style? First of all, declutter! Second, stick to earthy and neutral colors with natural materials like bamboo, wood and stone as much as possible.
Wall Panelling
Wood-panelled walls have become much more popular in homes this past year. With influencers DIYing their own panels for cheap and showing their audience how to do the same, it’s no wonder this trend took off. Wall panels are a great way to add additional character to your home and give your flat walls a bit of texture and depth.
