Creating The Perfect Artist Environment At Home
Art studios come in all shapes and sizes but are always a personal space. To help you create your very own art studio within a space at home we’ve listed some of our top tips/ideas to help get your creativity flowing when thinking how to develop your DIY art space.
Escape to your own space
We all need to separate ourselves off every once in a while to be able to concentrate. Whether you like to work in a busy environment sometimes but more secluded others, think about this when choosing where to base your art studio. Lots of people use spare rooms and garages, however, if you don’t have space, taking advantage of corners within living rooms and kitchens is another ideal option! If you prefer to be a bit more secluded, then a screen/divider is the perfect non-permanent option to creating your personal space.
Lighting
Think about light when picking your area, do you prefer natural or artificial light when working? Having a window with a blind allows you the option to have both, so you can view your art in different lights.
Go Portable
If you want to be more flexible with where you work why not build yourself an art cart! Workstation and storage all in one if you fancy. Art carts mean you can move all of your tools and materials wherever you fancy and easily pop it away out of sight when you’re done. It’s also great if you have kids as you can create their very own art cart for self-service, giving everyday craft supplies their very own space.
Take a step back
We all like to take a step away from our work to see how it’s looking so far. Whether setting up your studio on canvas, an easel or at a desk see if you can cater for the space needed to take a step back and view your work as it progresses.
Inspire yourself
Look to create a visual idea board within your workspace. Fill it with other artists work you like, colour swatches from every day that you love, prints that interest you, quotes, doodles, whatever may help your creative juices flow; let your thoughts wander onto the board.
Phone Free Zone?
Phones are a big zapper of creative mojo; a quick check of a message can turn to hours scrolling through social media. Look to make your art space a phone free zone. It’s also a great idea to create a playlist so that you don’t have to keep fiddling with your phone or player when trying to find your favourite tune.
Decorate
This space is supposed to be creative so try not to be too regimental- think decoration; sculptures, flowers, mirrors, books…
Short on space?
If you haven’t got the desk space get creative. Using walls, shelving, storage under tables etc is a great way to give things their own home as well as allowing you to save on space.
Gallery Wall
Don’t forget to give your work some pride of place within your art studio so you can see how its developed over time and appreciate your past finished pieces!
Go With it!
Don’t focus on being messy or minimalistic, just go with whatever happens as your space develops, it’s all personal.
